Crisis treatment
Many people don't
see a dentist on a regular basis. They go only when they feel they have
a problem. We call this "crisis management" as opposed to "preventive
management".
While these patients may feel they are saving money, it
usually ends up costing much more in both dollars and time. The reason
for this is that most dental problems don't have any symptoms until they
reach the advanced stages.
An example is gum (or periodontal) disease. It is often
referred to as the "silent killer of teeth". It is difficult or
impossible to detect without measurements of the depth of the pockets
(cuff) around the teeth. It is also necessary to combine these
measurements with dental x-rays for early detection of serious gum
problems.
With early detection, periodontal disease is most often treatable
with conservative, non-surgical, advanced gum therapy.
