I'm excited to take this opportunity to introduce you to Lake County Dental Care's newest member of its team, Dr. Bret Gilsdorf. Dr. Gilsdorf was in corporate practice in Mukwonago, Wisconsin prior to relocating to the area. Due to his passion in treating all phases of dental care, he decided to pursue a private practice where he could offer patients the best dental care for their specific needs. Dr. Gilsdorf enthusiastically accepted a position in Libertyville with me in August. Originally from a small farming town in South Dakota, Dr. Gilsdorf graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of South Dakota with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology where he also was a member of several honor societies. After receiving his undergraduate degree, Dr. Gilsdorf worked at a local hospital while he waited to begin medical school. During this time he came to the conclusion that he would not enjoy practicing medicine, withdrew from medical school, and began research at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in the field of cytogenetics. He had several friends in dental school at the time and spent a number of evenings watching them practice at the school lab. He realized then that dentistry was his calling and soon was accepted into the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College of Dentistry. After completing the four-year curriculum, he received his dental degree, graduating with Distinction Honors. While in dental school, Dr. Gilsdorf was on the Dean’s list, received the Board of Regents Scholarship, and served as a member of the American Dental Political Action Committee. Dr. Gilsdorf is a recipient of the B.L. Hooper Prosthodontics Award, Certificate of Recognition for his presentations at University of Nebraska Medical Center 1st Annual Implant Day, and University of Nebraska Medical Center Dean’s Award for Academic Achievement. He received his Oral Conscious Sedation permit in 2007, after extensive studies with the Dental Organization of Conscious Sedation and meeting state regulations. Dr. Gilsdorf’s commitment to his community started in his youth as a volunteer at a local nursing home. He has also been involved with the Waukesha County Community Dental Clinic, the Sonrisa Dental Project, and “Dental Days” 1 through 4 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, providing care to under privileged children. Dr. Gilsdorf was a member of the Army National Guard and volunteered on the First Response Team. He aided during the Spencer, SD tornado disaster and received the Army Achievement Medal, Distinguished Service Award, and the National Defense Ribbon during his service in the military. Dr. Gilsdorf recently moved to Libertyville with his beagle, Scotch. During leisure time, Dr. Gilsdorf enjoys riding his motorcycle, exercising, home improvement projects, and spending time with friends. He is active in the community, serving as Secretary on the Board of Mainstreet Libertyville and volunteering at HealthReach, a local clinic for the underserved. I look forward to all of you meeting Dr. Gilsdorf soon. |
